Are you interested in taking part in the new challenges of molecular biology? Then, the master programme in molecular biology may be something for you. The programme will give you a solid background for further research studies, and a thorough base for the requirements that you can meet from employers outside the university.
New technologies, making it possible to see what is happening at the cellular and molecular levels have been developed in the area of molecular biology. These new technologies, together with the genetic maps of a number of different species, give the foundations for the new challenges of molecular biology - to find new proteins, how they interact, and what mechanisms that guide cellular differentiation. Performing research on a number different species of model organisms will give you knowledge of the molecular mechanisms that regulate important functions inside the living cell, and also of the development of characteristics of different organisms.
This master programme gives you a possibility to enter more deeply into fields like molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, plant molecular biology and immunology. Possible workplaces for a master in molecular biology are universities, university colleges, hospital laboratories, civil services and public authorities, but also food-, drug- and biotechnological companies.
Advanced level courses in biology or in other relevant subjects, and a degree project of 30, 45 or 60 higher education credits (hec). The degree project is either strongly connected to research and supervised by one of the research groups at the university, or it is performed outside the university, for instance at a medical laboratory or a drug company. The degree project can also be performed at another university in Sweden, or abroad. A personal study plan, including your degree project and theoretical courses, will be put together with the coordinator of the master programme.
This programme leads to the degree Master of Science with a major in Molecular Biology. The degree will be achieved after you have fulfilled the requirements of 120 hec, at least 90 hep of which have to be at the advanced (second) level in biology, including a degree project of at least 30 hec. This means that you can include courses at the bachelor (first) level of up to 30 hec in your Master of Science degree.
Entrance Requirements: University studies of at least three full years, equal to a Bachelor´s degree in Science in Biology or Molecular Biology including at least 30 hec in Chemistry. English B level or English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 no part under 5.5 or TOEFL 575 p, TWE score 4.5 is also required.
Selection: Selection is based upon the number of credit points from previous university studies, maximum 225 hec.
