A wetland area at Slottsskogen - in 24 hours

News: Nov 10, 2009

Plan a wetland area at the Gothenburg park Slottsskogen and devise new educational exhibitions at conservation centre Nordens Ark.
These are just two examples of the sorts of assignments that biology students from the University of Gothenburg have been given by companies based in the region.

Mission 24 Biologi Special is a project linking biology students with their future employers. The mission is as difficult as it is simple: in teams of three to six, the thirty students are presented with assignments from companies and organisations based in the Gothenburg region, and they have exactly 24 hours to come up with a solution.

Sustainable development

The missions can be about anything to do with biology, such as ecotourism, water management, environmental and energy issues, marketing and information material, attitude surveys, sustainable development, fitness, leisure and education in nature, park management and horticulture etc.
This year's missions will be presented on 12-13 November at the Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre, and several of them are of considerable public interest:

• Gothenburg park Slottsskogen wants to investigate the possibility of constructing a wetland area in the park, which would benefit both the tourist industry and be of ecological value

• Nordens Ark in Lysekil is seeking the help of the biology students in developing proposals for new educational stations for children

Experience and contacts

When the 24 hours are up and the mission has been completed, the students meet their client to discuss the results.
"Hopefully the clients get some good ideas to help them move forward in the planning process, while the students gain some work experience, useful contacts and a bit of insight into how they can apply their studies in the labour market," says Marie Lenngren, Coordinator at the University of Gothenburg.

The missions will be handed out at the Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre at 9.00 a.m. on Thursday 12 November. The results will be presented in the same location at 9.15 a.m. on Friday 13 November. Journalists are welcome to attend.
